Biography Dr. Della Bella maintains a private practice in Montclair, New Jersey. He trained in New York City and has been practicing and teaching psychiatry since the mid-1990s. As a Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU School of Medicine and supervisor at the NYU Child Study Center, he trains post-graduate psychiatry fellows, and has been recognized as Teacher of Year. From the 1990s until 2013, Dr. Della Bella worked with patients and their family members at YAI/Premier HealthCare, a New York City based national model for integrated health care. He served as Premier's Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director, leading the agency to recognition with the U.S. Surgeon General and the National Committee for Quality Assurance. He has been interviewed by the New York Times, NY1 News, CD101.9, and WCBS Radio, and his articles have appeared in the Big Apple Parent Magazine and the Autism Spectrum News. Several of his talks can be accessed in the Resources section of this website. Dr. Della Bella has worked in cross-cultural psychiatric settings in New York City and New Zealand, has worked with LGBTQ teens at the Hetrick Martin Institute, and has provided services to many traditional and non-traditional families at all levels of care: outpatient, emergency, inpatient, and telemedicine services to rural Maine. He has consulted with the arts community at the Juilliard School and through NJPAC, with students at Montclair State University, and provided technical assistance to the State of New York, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the New York City Administration for Children's Services. Philosophy of Care Dr. Della Bella is highly experienced in providing comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and treatment planning in mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, behavioral disorders, family and parenting concerns, autism, Fragile X, Tourettes, and other psychiatric and developmental issues. His treatment approach is grounded in the scientific literature and he takes a larger systems-based approach to understanding challenges. He believes that people arrive at a crossroads from a pathway that is both understandable and ultimately self-directable. He is able to explain and integrate several different treatment approaches to help people navigate life transitions and reach their goals: insight-oriented therapy, behavioral and cognitive-behavioral techniques, family treatment, parent guidance, and medication. He frequently collaborates with other pediatricians, internists, and mental health specialists in a team treatment approach. Where appropriate, he uses medication to target underlying biological illness or serve as a bridge while more lasting growth and wellness come through psychotherapy and caregiver guidance. In his practice, Dr. Della Bella emphasizes the importance of wellness education, family, and community as routes to a good life. |
